What is sedation?

Sedation is a very effective way to ease your dental anxiety and make you much more willing to have the treatment you need. Once it is administered, you remain conscious but feel calm and relaxed. You can still communicate with us, but will not remember much, if any, of the treatment process once the sedation has worn off.

Sedation at Upper Berkeley Dental Care is administered by a fully qualified anaesthetist. It is very safe, with the level of sedation used tailored to your exact needs.

What does sedation involve at Upper Berkeley Dental Care?

Step 1

If you are interested in having sedation to help you feel relaxed during your dental treatment, we make sure you are suitable by assessing your general health and blood pressure levels. We explain the procedure if you are comfortable with this, and arrange your treatment.

Step 2

The sedation is administered before your treatment via a soft plastic tube in the back of your hand. It makes your appointment around 20-30 minutes longer than standard. The effects of the sedation don’t take long to take effect, and the anaesthetist monitors you closely throughout your treatment. You remain conscious, but relaxed and unable to feel any pain.

Step 3

After treatment, it can take a while for the effects of the sedation to wear off. You will need to bring a friend or family member to your appointment so they can accompany you home and stay with you for the rest of the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you help patients feel at ease?

There are a number of ways we help patients feel more relaxed in our care. We strive to create a welcoming and supportive atmosphere in our practice, where our patients feel valued and looked after. We also take time to listen to our patients’ concerns and follow a gentle, patient-focused approach. We also have a number of sensory items to help de-stress and calm our patients.

Is sedation safe?

Yes, sedation is considered safe when it is administered by a qualified and experienced professional. We put your safety first and ensure you are suitable for sedation before it is administered. We follow proper protocols and make sure you understand the process so you can give informed consent.

Can I request sedation?

If you feel that sedation would make you more comfortable during your dental treatment, please discuss it with us. We will assess your suitability and explain the potential benefits and risks.

Do I still need an anaesthetic injection if I have sedation?

In most cases, you will still need a local anaesthetic injection even if you are having sedation. This is because sedation primarily relaxes you and reduces anxiety, while the local anaesthetic numbs the area being treated.

How much does sedation cost?

Sedation will incur an extra charge on top of your treatment fee. You will be given a quote at the consultation stage, before your treatment begins.
