Why are dental hygiene appointments important?

Regular visits to a dental hygienist are the best way to ensure you maintain healthy teeth and gums, protect your oral health, and keep your smile sparkling bright! A professional teeth clean builds on your oral hygiene routine at home, as our hygienists can remove stubborn plaque deposits from even the hard-to-reach areas.

A visit to our dental hygienists helps to prevent gum disease, which causes inflammation of the gum tissues surrounding your teeth. Without appropriate treatment, it can cause gums to recede and your teeth can become loose or even fall out. Luckily, we are here to help! We check for gum disease and other oral issues at every appointment, ensuring we catch it before it gets any worse. Your oral health is in safe hands.

What does dental hygiene treatment involve?

Step 1

When you arrive for your hygiene appointment, we warmly welcome you and start by asking a little about your daily oral care routine. We check if you have any problems with your teeth or gums, and if anything is concerning you. We let you know what to expect from your hygiene treatment and make sure you are feeling comfortable and ready.

Step 2

We professionally clean your teeth, using a technique known as scaling. This deep clean involves removing plaque and tartar build-ups from your teeth, which can also reduce staining. We use specialist equipment and techniques to ensure the best results.

Step 3

After scaling, we take time to carefully polish your teeth. This makes them look and feel clean, smooth and bright, able to boost your confidence in your smile.

Step 4

At the end of your appointment, we offer personalised advice on how to keep your teeth plaque-free and healthy at home. We show you how to use interdental brushes and floss correctly, and can advise which would be best for your case. If necessary, we may also offer some diet and lifestyle tips to help your smile shine bright!

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I brush my teeth?

You should brush your teeth twice a day, for at least two minutes at a time. Teeth cleaning helps remove plaque from your teeth and goes a long way to keeping your mouth healthy.

How often should I floss?

You should floss or use interdental brushes to clean between your teeth once a day. This removes build-ups of plaque and food debris that can collect in the spaces between your teeth, and helps keep your teeth and gums healthy.

What do dental hygienists do?

Dental hygienists are highly trained and knowledgeable dental professionals who help protect your oral health. They can remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and around the gum line, offer treatment to help prevent gum disease and tooth decay, and give advice to enable you to best care for your teeth and gums. Our dental hygienists work closely with our dentist for a combined approach to excellent oral health.

How often should I see a dental hygienist?

Everyone is different, so there is no one-size-fits-all approach to the frequency of dental hygiene appointments. Many people visit the hygienist every six months, alongside their regular dental check-ups, but if your oral hygiene is excellent we may suggest an appointment once a year instead. We are happy to let you know when to book your next appointment.

What can I expect at a dental hygienist appointment?

At a dental hygienist appointment, you can expect an informal chat about your oral hygiene habits and overall health, a professional teeth clean and polish, and advice to help you keep your teeth and gums healthy.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is the inflammation of the tissues surrounding your teeth. The symptoms of the early stage of gum disease, gingivitis, include swollen and red gums that bleed when they are brushed. With appropriate treatment, this can be reversed, but if left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis. This is a more severe stage, which causes gums to recede and pockets of aggressive bacteria to develop between the gum and tooth. This leads to loose teeth and even tooth loss. The later stage of gum disease can be controlled and managed with extensive treatment, but can’t be reversed.

What causes gum disease?

Gum disease is caused by plaque build-ups on teeth and around the gum line not being successfully removed. It can occur with poor brushing and flossing, as this enables plaque and tartar to remain on teeth and contribute to the infection.

Can a hygienist whiten my teeth?

The role of a dental hygienist is not to whiten teeth, but you will likely find that your teeth appear whiter and brighter once they have been professionally cleaned. If you would like your teeth to be whiter, we offer professional teeth whitening treatment with our dentist. Please get in touch for more information.
