What are dental implants?

Dental implants are strong titanium posts which are surgically placed into your jawbone to exactly mimic a natural tooth root. They offer a strong and secure solution for missing teeth, forming a solid foundation to support a crown or bridge for a highly natural-looking result.

Replacing a missing tooth, or multiple missing teeth, with a stable and aesthetic implant can significantly improve your quality of life. You can eat and speak without worrying about wobbly dentures or a noticeable gap, and can show your smile with pride. Dental implants also sustain your facial structure and keep your remaining natural teeth in place.

What does dental implant treatment involve?

Step 1

If you are interested in dental implants to fill the gap in your smile, we see you for a detailed initial consultation. We go through the treatment process in detail, making you aware that your implant surgery will be handled by an expert implant dentist. We examine your teeth to ensure you are suitable for treatment, and may take an x-ray to help with this. We also give you the chance to ask any questions.

Step 2

We use digital images, scans and x-rays to create your bespoke treatment plan. This includes details on the timescales and costs of treatment, along with the precise positions for your dental implant or multiple implants.

Step 3

You are referred to a highly experienced implant dentist, who places your implant into your jawbone during a short surgical appointment. Local anaesthetic is used to minimise any discomfort, and sedation can be used if necessary.

Step 4

It takes around 3-6 months for your dental implant to heal and fuse correctly with your jawbone to become a solid foundation. To protect your gum during this time, we fit a temporary tooth in place.

Step 5

When your dental implant has healed and integrated properly, we take impressions of your mouth so your final crown can be custom-made. We remove your temporary tooth and fit the new one in place using strong dental cement to complete your new smile!

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is a good candidate for dental implants?

Most people are a good candidate for dental implants, as long as they are generally healthy, in good oral health and have enough bone density in their jaw to support the implant. Bone volume can be improved with a bone graft or sinus lift to boost a successful outcome. At your initial consultation, you will be given an idea of your suitability for implants.

What is the dental implant process?

The dental implant process begins with a consultation and planning. You then have a surgical appointment to fit the implant and a period of healing time. Finally, a custom crown or bridge is fitted on top of your implant to complete your smile.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants have the potential to last a lifetime if they are looked after properly. This involves keeping up with a good oral hygiene routine at home, taking care to brush the gum around your implant to keep it healthy and problem-free. The crown or bridge fitted on top of your implant may need to be replaced over time due to natural wear and tear.

Is dental implant treatment painful?

Local anaesthetic is used during the fitting of your dental implant, so you won’t feel any pain. Sedation can also be used if necessary. After surgery, you may feel some discomfort, but this can be managed using over-the-counter painkillers, as advised by your dentist.

How do I look after my dental implant?

The best way to look after your dental implant is to treat it like a natural tooth. Brush and floss twice a day, paying attention to the gum surrounding your implant to keep it healthy. It is also important to visit your dentist for regular check-ups, so they can keep an eye on your implant and make sure it is remaining problem-free.

Will other people be able to tell I have a dental implant?

Dental implants feel and function just like a natural tooth root. Your replacement tooth is also incredibly natural-looking, as we match the shape and colour of your existing teeth for a seamless blend. No-one will be able to tell you have a dental implant fitted.

Do dental implants damage teeth?

Dental implants are placed without causing any damage to your surrounding teeth. Also, the replacement crown or bridge can be fitted on top with no preparation needed to the adjacent teeth. No natural teeth are damaged at all.
