What is a dental emergency?

A dental emergency can take many forms, but is typically sudden, unexpected, and painful. It can occur as the result of an accident or injury, causing dental trauma and damage. In all cases, the sooner you can be seen by a professional emergency dentist, the better chance of a fast outcome. We respond quickly to dental emergencies, helping to get you out of pain and back to full function as soon as we can.

Any of the following situations could be considered a dental emergency. If you experience any of these, please contact us as soon as possible.

  • Severe pain in your teeth, gums or mouth, particularly if it comes on suddenly
  • A damaged, fractured or broken tooth
  • A tooth that has been knocked out
  • Extreme swelling or an abscess in your gum
  • A lost crown or filling

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if I have a dental emergency?

If you require emergency treatment, please call us and ask to see a dentist as soon as possible. We will book your emergency appointment and give you some advice to follow in the meantime. We offer a same-day emergency service, so in most cases you will be able to see us the same day as you call.

What should I do if I have a knocked-out tooth?

If you have knocked out a tooth, or several teeth, you need to see a dentist as soon as possible. The sooner you are seen, the more chance there is of re-implanting your tooth, depending on the severity of your treatment. Before your appointment, it is important you keep the knocked-out tooth clean. Make sure you avoid handling the root. In some cases, you may be able to put the tooth back into the socket by biting down on a clean paper towel for 15-20 minutes.

What should I do if I have severe toothache?

If you suffer from severe toothache, please get in touch with us as soon as possible to book your emergency appointment. We will take a look at the issue, diagnose the cause of your pain, and provide treatment to relieve it.

What should I do if I have a chipped tooth?

If you have chipped or broken a tooth due to an injury or accident, it is very important that you contact us immediately, even if the tooth is only slightly chipped. We can provide emergency treatment, which may include smoothing the uneven edge and replacing the missing part with a tooth-coloured filling. A broken back tooth may need to be covered with a dental crown.
